With the acquisition of Italcementi in the second half of 2016, HeidelbergCement became a major actor in the French building materials market: through Ciments Calcia in the cement business, Unibéton in the ready-mixed concrete business and, in aggregates production and supply, through GSM. HeidelbergCement is now also producing lime in France, with Socli, and operating a transport company, Tratel – a key player in the transport of pulverulent/bulk powder products.

The network of nearly 300 sites across France: cement plants and distribution centers, aggregates (crushed rock, sand, and gravel) quarries and platforms, as well as RMC sites, plays a leading role in the building materials market. In June 2014, Ciments Calcia's new Bruneseau distribution center was opened in eastern Paris, for grey and white cements. This site, the first "rock" anchoring the vast redevelopment of Paris' 13th district, underscores the company's role as a major supplier for the Paris region. It limits transport-related impacts and improves logistics for all customers.

For decades, all operations in France have been engaged in commitments to quality, environment, and energy. Ciments Calcia was the first European cement producer to be awarded the quality and environment certifications ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Ciments Calcia and GSM have been recognised by the Ministry of Environment for their Biodiversity Management System. Both entities are now certified ISO 50001 for their Energy Management System.
